Celebrating over 150 years of history, community spirit, and architectural beauty, Brockley's Conservation Area stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of London's vibrant past and its harmonious blend with modern living.
The place-name is usually treated as Old English, with competing interpretations including Broca's clearing or a clearing associated with a brook; the exact derivation remains uncertain.
A Premonstratensian abbey was founded at Brockley but soon moved to Bayham. The site became Manor Farm, later worked by Joseph Myatt as market gardens.

When Hilly Fields opened in 1896 it was laid out with a bandstand, a refreshment house and shelters. Most are now gone, remembered through Edwardian postcards and the marks that surface in the grass each dry summer.
